Trouble Starting Your Car?

Here’s What You Need to Know About Starter Repair

Starter Repair 101

When you turn the key or press the start button on your car, you hear nothing but a click, or worse, nothing. It’s a frustrating and stressful experience. Most drivers immediately assume it’s the battery. While that’s often the case, another key component can leave you stranded: the starter.

We encounter starter issues regularly. Recognizing the signs of a failing starter and addressing them promptly can save you time and money, as well as the inconvenience of being stranded in a parking lot or on the side of the road.

Let’s break down what the starter does, why it fails, and how to spot the warning signs.

Common Signs of a Failing Starter

The starter is a small electric motor powered by the battery. It’s job is to turn the engine over and get it running when you start your vehicle. When you turn the ignition key or press the start button, the starter engages the flywheel, cranks the engine, and starts the combustion process. Once the engine is running, the starter disengages.  Although it’s only used for a few seconds each time you start your car, it’s a crucial part of the system. Without it, your engine simply won’t start. Starters can wear out over time due to normal use, heat damage, electrical issues, or internal failures. Here are some common signs that your starter may be on its way out:

  • Clicking Sound When You Turn the Key
    • One of the most common symptoms of a faulty starter is a single loud or repeated clicking when attempting to start the car. This often indicates that the starter solenoid is trying to engage, but the motor isn’t turning.
  • Intermittent Starting
    • Sometimes the car starts fine, and other times it doesn’t start at all. This inconsistency is often overlooked, but it’s a big red flag that your starter may be failing.
  • Grinding Noise
    • If you hear a grinding noise while starting the engine, the gears on the starter motor or the flywheel may be worn out. This can lead to severe engine damage if not addressed quickly.
  • Dashboard Lights but No Crank
    • If your dashboard lights come on but the engine doesn’t crank, it could indicate a starter problem (assuming your battery is charged and healthy).
