Power Steering Issues and Repairs

Everything You Need to Know

Keep Your Power Steering System in Great Shape

At Valencia Auto Performance and Simply Smog, we understand the importance of keeping your vehicle running safely and smoothly. One issue that often catches drivers off guard is power steering failure. Whether you’re navigating the busy roads of Santa Clarita or heading up the 14 freeway, reliable steering is a must. Power steering problems can lead to dangerous driving conditions and costly repairs if left unaddressed.

Below are common power steering issues, how to spot the warning signs, and what you can do to keep your steering system in top shape.

What Are Common Power Steering Issues?

Power steering is a system that assists you in turning the wheels of your vehicle with minimal effort. Most modern cars use either hydraulic or electric power steering systems. Hydraulic systems rely on fluid pressure to assist in turning, while electric systems use an electric motor.

Regardless of the type, the goal is to make steering easier, especially at low speeds or when maneuvering in tight spaces. When something goes wrong with your power steering, it can make your vehicle more difficult to control, which is frustrating and potentially dangerous. Some common power steering problems include:

  • Power Steering Fluid Leaks
    • Hydraulic power steering systems require fluid to function correctly. Over time, hoses and seals can deteriorate, leading to leaks. If your fluid level drops too low, you may notice stiff steering or hear whining noises when turning the wheel.
  • Noisy Steering
    • If you hear groaning, whining, or squealing sounds when turning, it could be a sign of low fluid, a failing pump, or worn components in the steering system. Don’t ignore unusual noises. They’re often the first sign something’s wrong.
  • Stiff or Difficult Steering
    • If your steering wheel feels unusually heavy or hard to turn, especially at lower speeds, this could point to a failing power steering pump or issues with the steering rack.
  • Jerky or Uneven Steering
    • If your vehicle doesn’t respond smoothly when you turn the wheel, or if it feels like it “catches,” you may have a damaged steering gear or worn suspension parts affecting the system.
  • Dashboard Warning Light
    • Some vehicles will display a power steering warning light if there’s a problem. This is especially common with electric power steering systems. Don’t ignore this light. Get it checked right away.
